Product thinking is an engineering skill

If the team cannot say what should not be built, they are not doing product work. They are taking orders.

Vantrea Tech

Engineering teams inherit tickets. Product teams inherit problems. The difference is not a job title. It is whether someone is allowed to change the request.

A useful engineer asks what job the feature is hired to do, who will operate it, and what happens when it fails. Those questions look like delay. They are usually cheaper than a quarter of rework.

Vantrea treats product thinking as part of delivery. Scope is a design problem. If a backlog cannot survive the question “why this, why now”, it is not a plan. It is a wish list with story points.

The practical habit is a written non-goal. Every slice should name what it will refuse. Teams that cannot refuse will drown in adjacent requests that feel reasonable in isolation.

None of this requires a framework. It requires a person who will say the uncomfortable sentence in the room, and a client who wants that person in the room.
